Breast Augmentation

Three major groups of women consider augmentation: 1) Women who had little to no breast development, 2) Women who lost their breast size and shape after child birth, 3) Women who want to improve their breast for other personal reasons, such as, asymmetry and difficulty in finding clothes that fit well.
Augmentation mammaplasty is a surgical procedure performed to enlarge the breasts and to potentially improve the shape of the breasts. Common reasons to perform breast augmentation include:

  • For enhancement of body contour in women who feel that the breast size is too small.
  • To correct the loss in breast volume and restore a better shape to the breasts after pregnancy.
  • To balance asymmetrical breast size, when there is a significant difference between the breasts.
  • Replacement or exchange of breast implants for cosmetic reasons.
  • As a reconstructive procedure for various breast conditions.

You have a choice between Gel or Saline implants. Dr Soueid will help you decide on what is best for you.
Placement could either be above or underneath the pectoralis major muscle.

Insertion of the implants is done from underneath the breast, axilla, periareola, or the Belly button (TUBA) which is commonly performed by Dr. Soueid.

Silicone Gel Implants

You have heard the news about the availability of silicone breast implants. Many more people now have a choice between saline and silicone implants.

Why is there now an age of 22 for breast augmentation?

FDA required this limitation.
Mentor Implant maker agrees that women who choose breast augmentation should be ready both physically and emotionally, and that this decision to have a procedure should be reached only after informed consultation with their physician. This decision involves a different set of factors when a reconstruction or revision procedure is involved.

Are there similar age restrictions for saline breast implants?

The labeling for saline breast implants restricts breast augmentation to patients 18 years or older

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to return youthful shape and lift to breasts that have sagged as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, loss of the skin's natural elasticity or simply the effects of aging and gravity. The procedure can also reduce areolar size (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), and it can be combined with breast reduction for added firmness. It is usually done under general anesthesia, and lasts from one to three hours. Dr Soueid performs short scar (Vertical Scar technique) breast lift minimizing the recovery time and avoiding unecessary scarring with excellent aesthetic results.

Vertical Breast Lift

The vertical breast lift technique is ideally suited for saggy breasts that are wide and have a nipple that requires greater than 6 centimeters of lift. The vertical incision is made along with a periareolar incision. The breast gland can be reshaped and lifted through these incisions with or without the use of implants. With a vertical breast lift, the nipple can be lifted 6 to 10 centimeters. The wide breast skin is removed and the breast is molded into a more beautiful shape. Skin closure is made without creating a lot of tension. When there is little skin tension, there is usually great healing and, in most cases, the incisions begin to fade soon after surgery. The vertical incision technique can be used in patients who previously would have required a wise pattern or lollipop incision and is considered to be a state-of-the-art, minimally incision alternative more extensive procedures.

Reversing Nipple Inversion

Inversion of the nipples occurs in some patients. In the majority of cases, patients are born with this condition. Nipple inversion is bothersome to many individuals and a relatively simple procedure can be performed that will correct the condition. Correction of nipple inversion can be corrected by performed alone or in combination with breast augmentation or breast lift.

Breast Reduction

Large breasts can cause pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities, and low self-esteem. Breast reduction surgery is usually done to provide relief from these symptoms. Performed under general anesthesia, the two- to four-hour procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body.

Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts." Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. It is estimated that at some time in their life over a third of men experience this problem. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast over development, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breast and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. Surgery to correct gynecomastia is performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age.
